The moment you walk into most thrift stores, whether it be the Goodwill or your local boutique consignment shop, you’re hit with an abundance of items. Even Though I consider myself to be a seasoned treasure hunter (self proclaimed), sometimes going to the thrift store can be daunting and downright overwhelming if you don’t know what you’re looking for. If this is you, keep reading...not only have I created a short list of staple items to look for that will make thrifting a breeze but I'm giving you my secrets to easy styling.
Layering is always a hit when it comes to creating stylish looks. Adding a blazer finishes any outfit, casual or dressy. Thrift stores often have various style blazers of different prints and fabrics for women and men. Ladies, don’t be afraid to look in the men’s section for blazers. You will be surprised at how amazing a men’s blazer will look on you if it’s just the right fit. As you read through my list, you’ll find out how much I actually love blazers.
The perfect pair of jeans can change your life (just sayin). Thrift stores tend to carry countless pairs of jeans so this category may require a little more time to sift through. Because jeans come in so many different styles and washes, it helps to have an idea of what style jean fits you the best. For example, if you’re mostly a skinny jean wearer and prefer a dark wash, you may want to skip past the lighter colored wide legged trousers. The key is in the fit. A great pair of denim is easily the most commonly used piece on this list…And for good reason. Add a dressy or casual top and a blazer, some shoes accessories and "boom", you’re dressed!
Not only are dresses my absolute favorite but having one single piece of clothing that covers all necessary areas has a way of making your life so much easier. I’ve been known to take a simple dress and layer it with a button down shirt, a hoodie, a t-shirt or a blazer (depending on my mood). The variations of dresses makes it insanely easy for your imagination to run wild. By taking a dress and adding other pieces you instantly give yourself endless styling opportunities. Don’t skip this section in your thrift stores because dresses are everything!
4. T-Shirts (Graphic Tees)
A simple tee can take other pieces in your wardrobe pretty far. Thrift stores will always have a large selection of tees. There are tees with graphics, plain or modern prints and they come in different styles: long, cropped, V neck or crew neck. A Tee can be paired with jeans, skirts, leggings and more! Finish the look with, yes you guessed it, a blazer and there you have it!
If you make a beeline for either (of all) of these sections in the thrift store, you will be less likely to feel like your head is spinning. These 4 simple staples are treasures that all have the ability to take your current wardrobe to the next level and take the guesswork out of creating a chic look.
Chances are you already have several of these items in your closet and you would just like to give it a fresh and updated look. Recycle and sell your used items on Poshmark and use that money to shop with so you don’t end up with a ton of things you’re not wearing. It’s also just a great way to earn extra cash.
